Neighbors on Brainard Road will hold an informational meeting on Monday to discuss an application filed with the Connecticut Siting Council to build a 170-foot cellular tower in their backyard.

SBA Communications filed an application in December to construct the tower and a facility for it on 49 Brainard Road.

The tower, with antennas and associated equipment, would be located on the northern portion of the 51-acre property. The plans also call for a 75-by-75-foot, fenced-in compound.

Neighbors and other interested members of the community are trying to organize opposition to the proposal. They are inviting anyone interested in the issue to come to the meeting, scheduled for 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at the East Lyme Community Center.

Topics at the meeting will include the Connecticut Siting Council process, the timeline for the project and an overview on the proposal.

The Board of Selectmen in December authorized First Selectman Paul Formica to draft a letter to the Siting Council expressing their concern with the proposal. The board said it felt the location for the tower was inappropriate.

SBA is an independent owner and operator of wireless infrastructure nationwide. The company owns and maintains 7,800 telecommunications facilities in the country.

The application states that the tower on Brainard Road would be used by four cell phone companies, and SBA would make space available, free of charge, for the town to use for its public-safety communications.

The total construction cost for the facility is $195,000.
