Proposed legislation will study electromagnetic fields and cancer

BOSTON — Legislation to study the public health effects of electromagnetic fields proposed by state Rep. David Linsky, D-Natick, will receive a hearing on Tuesday, Oct. 18, before the Joint Committee on Public Health.

Linsky filed the bill after hearing about high cancer rates in certain west Natick neighborhoods around the high-tension electric wires.

“Several West Natick residents came to me and pointed out that there have been an usually high number of residents with cancer in a neighborhood near the high tension wires,” said Linsky. “I am not a doctor or a public health expert but it is clear to me that this is an issue to that needs to be looked at. I do not know of any other neighborhood in Natick with this rate of cancer frequency.”

The bill, if passed, will form a commission to study and investigate the public health effects and safety of electric and magnetic fields emanating from overhead or other electric transmission wires. The commission would then report to the Legislature and make recommendations for how electric and magnetic fields should be regulated.

“My staff and I conducted significant amounts of research on this, and it appears that there is growing scientific evidence to show a link between public health and electromagnetic fields, especially with cases of leukemia,” said Linsky.
