The Board of Supervisors Public Safety Committee approved a resolution Monday that urges the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to study the health impacts of wireless facilities and, “if appropriate,” establish a safe level of exposure to radio-frequency radiation emissions.
“The scientific community and most health officials agree that more research is needed to provide a definitive answer to the effects of extremely low-frequency electromagnetic and radio-frequency radiation on our health and recommend prudent avoidance of equipment which generates non-ionizing radiation,” the resolution states.
The resolution also urges the feds to repeal limitations on state and local authorities, as a result of the Telecommunications Act of 1996, “that infringe upon the authority of local governments to regulate placement, construction and modification of telecommunications towers and other personal wireless facilities on the basis of the health and environmental effects of these facilities.”
The resolution next goes to the full board for a vote. A resolution is not legally binding, but is an effort to send a message and generate political support.
The resolution is the latest effort by San Francisco to address possible health risks associated with wireless devices. Mayor Gavin Newsom supports labeling cell phone devices noting their radiation levels.
