A proposed wireless communications structure at Bryant Glen Sports Park in Yucaipa is drawing criticism from a group of residents.
They believe the city would be putting the public's long-term health at risk, particularly those of children.
"I cannot be silent on this matter," said Kelly Spitzer, addressing the Yucaipa City Council on Monday night. Spitzer spoke of the effects of radiation and cancer clusters near cell phone towers.
A staff report states that in October 2009 the City Council directed staff to begin negotiations with a company's request to lease space for a communications tower at the park. The structure, a base station, would have three panel antennas and two elevated microwave dishes and would provide high-speed Internet access.
Confronted with opposition, the city hired a research scientist in this field, Asher Sheppard, to study the proposed park structure and address any health and safety risks.
He told the City Council Monday that electromagnetic energy radiated from the antennas would not pose a health risk.
Resident Paul Bolock compared this issue to global warming: Some believe in it and others do not. He said he sees a health risk from wireless communication sites.
"Prove me wrong and I'll be happy to walk and go away," he said.
Spitzer called for a moratorium on new antennas or cell phone towers in Yucaipa. The council did not take any action. Mayor Dick Riddell stressed this was a study session.
